Sunnyslope QB Maraz exploring options

Phoenix Sunnyslope junior Ben Maraz is expected to be the second most recruited quarterback in the state next season after Chandler's Brett Hundley. He was listed last season at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. He didn't put up great numbers on a 2-8 team.  He was 109 of 200 for 1,346 yards and 11 touchdowns with 10 interceptions.

But there is a lot to like  about Maraz. He has a cannon  for an arm. He is strong. Has great pocket presence. Very smart. He studies the game. And he puts in the time to get better.

This is kind of a lull period in recruiting. It will pick  up in mid-April and especially in May when highschools have spring workouts and college  coaches can come out and evaluate players.

Maraz has been told Boise State will be among those evaluating him in May.

"Assuming that interest stays high, we'd obviously be going to Boise's camp (this summer)," saidThomas Maraz, Ben's father.

Based on contacts and interest, the possible camps Maraz could be attending include Boise State, Washington, California, Oregon State, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada-Las Vegas. If Maraz takes an East  Coast swing, he would likely visit Rutgers, Virginia, Brown and Harvard.

The  family can't do all of these, and will  see how things play out in the next couple of months.

Maraz plans to attened the  Elite 11 at Texas Christian next month, and the Clarkson Dreammaker Tour in Las Vegas. He'll  probably attend a Nike Camp in Oakland in May. He'll be at UC-Davis for its spring game to see his brother Sean, who is a quarterback there.

He might set up unofficial visits at California and  Stanford while he's at it.

A couple of weeks ago, Thomas said his son spent more than an hour during an unofficial at UNLV with offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Rob Phenicie.

He has been invited to Colorado's Junior Day and Vanderbilt's "Super Saturday" spring game.

 Coach Mayfield's Coaching Philosophy

Each coach will respect, care, and hold accountable each student athlete.  Our coaches believe that desire, commitment, hard work, and the pursuit of excellence are the necessary tools needed to be successful both on the football field and in the classroom.  Our success will not be measured simply by wins and loses, but by the student athlete's ability to reflect on their high school football career as a positive, worthwhile, and fun experience.  We believe that student athletes who participate in sports, especially high school football, will have the opportunity to learn and formulate healthy and worthwhile character traits.
